Detox diets are all the rage,  everywhere you look you can find a book, article or product that promotes detoxification and a proactive lifestyle. While taking care of the body is essential to a long and happy life, it’s also important educate yourself on what really works.

First of all it’s important of know the difference between a fast and a body cleansing/detox diet. A fast usually consists of drinking large amounts of water, lemon water or fruit and vegetable juices for anywhere from 3 to 10 days at a time. These can be trying for those that aren’t disciplined and can also be unhealthy if you don’t know what you are doing. Starving yourself is not healthy. Fasting should be done under the guidance of a dietitian, nutritionist or doctor to ensure you are not harming your organs or your over-all health. Body Cleansing or Detox Diets consist of healthy diet changes, the introduction of more raw fruits and vegetables that promote the elimination of unwanted and impacted toxic waste. Eating a healthy diet of steamed vegetables, lean meats and fruits while avoid and eliminating all processed foods, foods high in saturated fats, soda, caffeine and starchy high calorie foods is a great way to improve your healthy, avoid illness, skin aliments and lose access weight associated with poor diets and eating habits. The Lemonade or Master Cleanse Diet – This diet was developed by Stanley Burrows as a fasting/detoxification program over 50 years ago. It’s intention is to rid the body of unwanted, impacted toxins and wastes while also promoting weight loss. This fast takes considerable discipline and focus to succeed. You cannot eat any foods or consume any supplements for  4-14 days. You live on a the Master Cleanse drink which consists of :

1-2  cups of water.

2 tablespoons of grade-B organic maple syrup.

2 tablespoons of fresh-squeezed lemon juice.

1/10 of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper.

It’s a no brainer that not eating for a long period of time will result in weight loss. Exercise is not recommended most likely due to the lack of food necessary to keep the body energized during a workout. After you complete the fast for the desired about of time you choose, you will have to ease back on to solid foods so you don’t shock the system. Whether or not a diet like this is actually beneficial is debatable. Most doctors and dietitians do not recommend fasting, as they see nothing positive about it. There is the question of losing lean muscle mass, depleting the body of essential vitamins and minerals and binge eating after the fasting is completed.
